Serendipity B&B

North Hatley

If you are looking for a nice quaint weekend getaway in the Eastern Townships, here is a place I highly recommend. It was our 29th wedding anniversary and we wanted a place to relax for the weekend. We were not disappointed. The B&B is situated in the beautiful village of North Hatley which is on Lake Massawippi. The hosts were very welcoming and went out of their way to satisfy us and their other guests.  Rooms are very reasonably priced and include breakfast.

About the house and the owners

The hosts have a beautiful old house, fully renovated and loaded with charm. The renovations were tastefully done, respecting the age and period of the house, as illustrated by the tin ceilings. The furniture was also chosen with this in mind.  The B&B is on two floors. The three guest bedrooms are upstairs, while the common living room with a coffee station and breakfast room are downstairs. The porch is also accessible to guests, with nice comfortable wicker furniture. The house faces right onto a canal.

Here some little known facts about the owners. The husband (Florent Hebert) is a professional angler in the region. So if you want to go fishing you are at the right place. He offers exclusive tours and he is affiliated with the famous Manoir Hovey. He took Hilary Clinton fishing when she visited the region.  Famous people have also stayed at the B&B, such as Justin Trudeau and Francois Legault. In the winter, Mr. Hebert offers a unique and deluxe ice fishing experience (he has his own heated fishing cabin and wood burning pizza oven). It sounded interesting even to a non fisherman like myself!

The Bedrooms

The rooms are not huge, but ours was very comfortable. The linen was very soft to the touch and the room was very clean. It was the lake room, one of two facing the canal. It was equipped with a small WC and shower in the room. I really liked the body wash/shampoo as well. Wi-Fi, air conditioner, slippers and hairdryer are accessible for free. You can also ask for an iron and ironing board of you need them. We found it nice to have no TV in the room and to just disconnect from the modern world.

There was a second room on the water (the River Room) and finally the Garden Room at the back. Though the Garden Room has access to a private bathroom with a clawfoot bathtub, it is physically located across the hall from the
bedroom.

The Breakfast room

This room is like the rest of the house very tastefully done. Entrances is via the kitchen which is off limits to the guests. The breakfast was very nice and the owner adapted the meal to my dietary needs. They even had almond milk for my coffee. I forgot to take a picture of the breakfast, but the presentation was very nice and the products fresh.

North Hatley

The village of North Hatley has quaint shops and restaurants.  It was a weird kind of feeling as I attended Sherbrooke University and this is the place I used to visit when I wanted to splurge and feel good. There are two general stores where you can find anything and everything from souvenirs to ice cream to gas for your car - all in one stop! You will also find a café, a chocolaterie and gelato shops. There is also a park with gazebos and a beach where you can kick back and relax. Other activities in the area include walking, hiking, golfing, cycling and of course fishing!

North Hatley is a place to get in touch with nature and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city. The fresh air will also make you sleep like a baby.
